As you begin reading the chapter about motivation and emotion (Chapter 9), take a minute to think about what motivates you, as well as what causes you to experience certain emotions.
Why do you think psychologists might want to study these two issues?
What are you hoping to learn about motivation and emotion? How do you think these two issues overlap... or do they?

With me, I have to have someone push me to the limits to do something, unless it's something I want desperately, then I will do just about whatever it takes to get it. Psychologists want to study this I think because alot of the times, when someone wants to pursue something, emotions often get in the way, and we don't know why.

I would have to say I'm pretty self motivated, but my horses and my parents really motivate me to try hard at everything I do. I think that emotion and motivation do overlap and that psychologists study them to see how they affect the brain and what drives a person.
It does't take much for me to do something, if i want something, i'll do what it takes to get it, if i need something i'll do the same. if i know something has to be done then that alone motivates me. i'm hoping to learn more about the connection between motivation and the emotions attatched to it. i think psychologist want to study these two issuses becuase they do overlap one another.
I am motivated by setting goals, leaving reminders, like notes or lists and also having role models. music and weather play a huge part in my emotions. psychologists might want to study this for purposes like weight loss, motivational speaking and obedience. I hope to learn why people can kill other people and how they can feel no remorse. These two overlap because motivation is sparked from an emotion. for example, a young boy sees a body builder and feels admiration, and this causes him to feel motivated to start lifting weights.
I'm a very competitive person by nature, so I think that trait of mine is definately what drives me. I think that emotion and motivation do cross paths and psychologists study that to see why they do and how it affects the brain

I'm a pretty competitive person. i find that Lila motivates me a lot as well as someone i might be competing against. A lot of times i might be too scared to try new things, but if Lilas is with me it doesn't seem as scary. I think its important for psychologist to study these issues because its usually our emotions that keep us from trying new things.
Growing up, I was usually motivated by the spirit of competition. The brothers McMillan grew up playing sports together and the competition was usually quite fierce. Being the oldest, I never wanted to be upstaged by my younger brothers, so that motivated me to excel. My birthday falls late in the year so I usually found myself competing with older kids. Here's an example: when I was in 6th grade I played on a soccer team made up of junior high kids. I was the youngest, by far, on that team. Man, now that I reflect on that period, it was pretty near "Lord of the Flies" at practice. The teasing was constant from a couple of the 8th graders. But their teasing motivated me to develop my skills and tackling and I still remember the practice where I blew up a couple of those dudes. But it was the fear of being teased that motivated me. And I can see this as a common thread now, in hindsight, for most of my time playing competitive team sports: it was the fear of failure; the fear of losing, the fear of being beaten. Sure, I set goals for myself with conditioning and weight training, but those markers only helped so much. There was always the fear of not being competitive nagging at the back of me. That all changed when I began to learn to play rugby when I was in college. It was so overwhelming, so much to learn, it was so counterintuitive to all the other sports I played; it became about mastering the specific skills of the game, it became about embracing the journey of learning the game. The joy was in being able to compete, to use the skills I'd developed. The fear wasn't so much a factor anymore.
I really enjoyed Mr. Mac's story about his sixth grade soccer team... I felt like I was both on the field and on the deserted island from Lord of the Flies. Yikes. How did any of us survive junior high?
For me, it was a weird ability to laugh off a lot of things that had the potential to hurt. Also, like Katie and Leeanne, I was hooked into the world of horses at an early age... and this provided all the motivation I needed to let the little things go that might otherwise have distracted me.
I find that self-motivation works much better than when I feel forced to do things, and I'm interested in studying this.
Finally... boy can I relate to Chelsea's comments about the weather. On sunny days, when nothing else has changed in my life, I feel much more motivated than I do when it's overcast.
This can be tough in the summers in Prunedale!
For me I am self motivated, I always work hard and do the very best I can. People often blame coaches of sports teams when a team loses on how the players wernt motivated enough; my view is if the players wernt already motivated, they shouldn't be playing. Our emotions often interfere our goals and dreams yet then again that is part of life having phycholigists try to explain that would just be a waste of time as normally you cant control emotions and trying to would only disturb the very life we are trying to control.
Kevin's comment about motivation in sports reminded me about an old (well, ancient to y'all!) baseball manager, Whitey Herzog, who had many years of success with the St. Louis Cardinals. Then, one year, he just up and quit... if my memory serves, it was in the middle of the season. But even if I'm wrong about that, his comment still makes resonates with me: "I just can't motivate those guys anymore," he lamented, referring to his baseball players. And I remember thinking, "They're in the Big Leagues... why do they need a coach to motivate them?"
I'm with Kevin on this one, though if we look around in all the media, I think it's an ongoing issue.

i have always been pretty self-motivated, when i was in grade school my parents used to motivate me a lot and push me to do work, but as i got older they slowly stopped and now i motivate myself. I think psychologists want to study motivation and emotion because they both directly affect human minds,i want to learn what causes motivation and emotion, i think these 2 issues are separate, but motivation can lead to an enthusiastic emotion.

For the most part I motivate myself. Sometimes I will find motivation in music only because it gets me pumped. Psychologists want to study motivation and emotion because I think they go hand in hand, to a certain extent. Sometimes you might get motivated by love, hate, or anger. I'm hoping to learn that they are indeed connected.

I find music to be totally amazing as a source of inspiration and/or motivation. I used to listen to the soundtrack of "Braveheart" before coaching rugby games at Chico State. The team would be warming up and I'd have that music blaring through my headphones and I'll tell you this: I was near-rabid by the time of the opening kickoff. I had to stop doing that because teams will emulate the mentality and persona of their coach and I wanted us to be cold, calculating, and efficient; not rabid, loose, and emotional.
For me my main motivation is my parents. My parents always want whats best for me, so i try to do the best i can to impress them. I think my main inspiration is music. I love music there are so many diffrent styles and interpretations of lyrics that it can mean so many things to so many people.

As for me, i am a very self motivated person hen it comes to doing stuff i love. I am the kind of person that will do whatever it takes to accomplish my goals and dreams and i wont let anyone stop me. i do believe that sometimes emotions get in the way of peoples hopes and dreams and that will cause them to lose thier motivation. The only advice i could give is stand up for you dreams and never let down.

Most of the time i am self motivated but sometimes i need to be pushed by my parents and friends. i think psychologists just want to know whats going on in our heads.
I myself cant get myself to be too self motivated. It takes alot to get me motivated. I get lazy and become a huge procrastinator. It all depends on my mood in my opinion, if im upset or tired then im not gonna feel to up to doing anything, whatever that may be. On the other hand I might actually be in a good mood, loads of energy and ill have the determination to do it in the process.
I like to think that I am self motivated which is why I chose to do independent study. If there is something I want, I will do everything I can until I get that. Motivation and emotions overlap each other and in a way work together to make you act a certain way or feel a certain way. Emotions do often get in the way but you just have to push through it to achieve whatever it is you are working towards.
I think I can be a self-motivated person when I really want to go for something or have a goal to pursue. When it comes to hard stuff my parents are always there to motivate me and help me get what it is that I want. I think psychologists want to study this because they want to know how it works on the human brain and body and why our bodies respond to it the way they do.

I always have to have a goal, usually when I am doing my homework and I am really hungry or I just want candy or something I'll get it and say okay I'll have a starburst after I finish 3 math problems and so forth.
I would say i am pretty self motivated, it helps having a very supportive family behind you. I think psychologist would want to study this because pretty often when someone wants to do something procrastination gets in the way and we want to know why that is.
I am most definitely self-motivated. Any number of my friends and family can tell you that. I don't think it was how I was raised or anything, just the fact that I developed into a very strong individual. I can't lie, the first thing that came to mind when I saw the word "motivation" was volleyball. This year, for example, my whole team is motivated because everyone in our league knows this is are year. Though I stay humble, I'm motivated by the fact that if we slip up, we can lose any chance we had to make it into the playoffs.
I do believe motivation and emotion are connected directly. The more motivated I am, the more intense my emotions become.
I completely know what sCrbadger is talking about! When I read a book, I usually text. If I get a message while reading I'll just say to myself, "No, I have to finish the page or the chapter before I can check my phone." It works!
When I get motivated, its because I really want to do it, or its something i have been wanting to do. When I get emotional , its because I am very passionate about it or it really touched me. Psychologist want to know that because when we get motivated to do something , sometimes we get tired and emotions start to run through us .
I would consider myself a self-motivated person because when I want something bad enough I will push myself until I get what I want or until I reach my goal. I am most motivated by my Grandpa because he always tells me I can do anything if I set my mind to it, that always keeps me going :)
I think Psychologists want to study motive and emotions to figure out what drives us to do what we do and the outcome of our emotions when we achieve our goals.
-Adrianna M :)
I definitely consider myself as a self motivated person. If I want to get something done a don't let anything get in the way, i push myself hard in order get things done. Its important to study emotion and motivation because that will help us better understand what drives us to persue our goals.
I consider myself a selfmotivated person because when I want something I don't stop trying until I get what I want. I think psychologists might want to study motivation and emotion because they want know why we act the we do.BEY BEY..........=)
Motivation and emotions go hand and hand when I get motivated its because I really want to do something for someone or myself which means your putting emotions into it. Pschologist want to know what emotions make you motivated thats why they want to know.
What motivates me is my future. It pushes me to do my best. I'm the kindof person who will do whatever it takes to accomplish my goals. I think pychologists want to study this because they want to know how it affects the brain.
I really like how you are all responding to this prompt. There are so many different kinds of motivations; I'm finding it super interesting to see what works for you all!
I would say im motivated by competition and things i love if i really want it im gonna work to get it and if im competing for it im gonna do the best i can to win. I think emotions can get in the way and take over peoples motivation but you just have to push through that to get what you ultimately want.

I think that the thought of sucess is what motivates me. I will push myself just so I can prove I can do it. I think psycholgists study these two issues because they want to see what drives us to do what we do. I am hoping to learn how I personally am motivated through my emotions.

I think I'm motivated by many things, but a big one would be my dad. He helped me pick my future career. He showed me how interesting and fun it could be. I do many of the things I do because I am so set on doing that career when I am older. I think the two overlap a lot. You could be motivated by certain emotions, or to AVOID certain emotions.
Derek H.
I am very self motivated because in the long run there isnt going to be anyone to push you to your goal. It is also much more achieveing to reach your goal on your own.I think emotion and motivation do overlap and psychologists study them to see how it works in an individuals brain.
