Unit Seven Talk It Over

As you make your way through this unit, what stands out in your mind? Think about what you've read in the text and the other students' blogs... what seems to be on all of our minds when we think of and study psychological disorders?
Respond with the kind of detail that will get us all thinking and asking more questions... in other words, learning about this issue!

I think the part that stands out the most to me is the "runnign amok with cultural maladies" I thought it was intresting how different cultures have different terms to explain people's behaviors.
When i read through the text i keep thinking about myself and if I have some type of disorder or something, I know I don't but I keep thinking that there is a possibility that I might.

I think that the way the brain works and how a person's environment affects their mentality and behavior is very interesting. I happen to know a few people with disorders like the ones in this chapter. I wonder how much an environment contributes to disorders such as these or if its just something your born with.

The metal disorders interesed me. I know several people who have mental disorders that are discussed in this chapter and reading this helped me understand what sorts of things they deal with.

I personally don't find it to be that interesting, however I did like the section on How The Brain Works, but other then that it has been quite dull for me. As for blogging and reading others blogs I do enjoy that a great deal. For psychological disorders I'm all for finding different cures and such but seems to me we'd rather spend money on a winless war that was only started for oil, or more money, that has ended up costing us in the trillions, was a base in the middle east really worth it, looks like people are more interested in causing harm then fixing harm.

when i think of psychology it just makes me think of how everyones mind and personality and the way they make sense of the world around them is slightly distorted and psychology helps us understand that.for example, someone who is very "angry at the world" that just may be how they deal with their sadness or someone might do drugs or withdrawl from people. or those who may act out in school, not because they are a "bad kid" but because they want attention

i agree with Kevin, what stands out this chapter is how the brain works, and also i'm surprised as to how many functions your brain has.

The section about how the brain works is what interested me the most. I've always been fascinated about how everything in the human body operates anyway so this was like candy for me.

i think the mental disorders and disabilities was what interested me the most. it helped me understand how people have to cope with all of the problems of a mental disorder or disability.

The part that stood out at me was the part about mental disorders. I think its amazing how psychologists have gotten to study different people with different disoreders and came down with a conclusion as to how some people deal with their disorders. Psychology is amazing. ha

I seem to like the examples/lists of categories of psychopathology really fascinate me, more because I dont really know too much about them ,so it's good to read further in to know what I'm dealing with. Yes at one point or another we all say "ohh yeah I sound like this, or my family sounds like that" so we begin to get paranoid and get caught up with the disorder and think we all have it, but let's not be rational...this COULD be us but it's probably in your case highly likely

I would have to say all the mental disorders had really interested me in this unit. I thought it was really interesting to read about how these disorders occur and the effects to them are. Also why they occur and how the brain reacts to it.

I recently had a very interesting experience here in KSA that reminded me of all the meanings of "crazy". The culture here believes in these "other beings" called Jiinns and many people we were with had stories about their encounters with these beings. One had recently lost a house staff to suicide because she felt she had to take care of them so often. Anyway, eventually one of the people turned to my family and explained the meaning of these beings and that in America many of the people who see them could be diagnosed with schizophrenia and other disorder because it is not common knowledge in America like it is here. So, it was interesting to read the clinical views and explanation in the book and then also have a real life counter experience here.

All the different disorders interest me. When i was reading about them i kept thinking could that happen to me or am i like that? The section about anxiety and panic attacks interested me because i get both and i like being aware of what i am experiencing. I am amazed by how much psychologist have learned about each disorder, and am happy i am aware of all of them.

I really like what jill72dm said about what's accepted from one culture to the next. Maybe Americans think bathing in and drinking out of a parasite-infected river is crazy, but Indians view it as a very holy thing to do. One thing that jumped out to me personally in this unit was schizophrenia; I've always wondered about this mental disorder. This and bipolar disease, which I'm actually pretty close to. In the movies, we see the way directors and producers interpret these types of disorders and blow them up on the big screen, but in this chapter, we see what's really going on.

I found that learning about the different psychological disorders was interesting because I noticed that I have friends and family members with some of the disorders from the chapter. One of my best friends is bi-polar, she's crazy but not the insane crazy the wild, crazy. I also know a few people who have bad anxiety.

Learning about all the mental disorders really got me thinking on how powerful the brain is. The one that caught my attention the most was Schizophrenia. Most of these mental disorders have a huge impact on a person's life. This section helps us understand the kind of things these people go through.

This unit I've learned alot about psychological disorders. I think it is interesting learning what causes people to get this psychological disorders. I would like to know if there is anyway that any of the disorders that are in this unit can be controlled and who do you need help from to control them.

In this unit i've learned a lot about psychological disorders, and i think it's really interesting. I think how people think and react differently is so amazing. It's crazy how the brain works.

The main thing that stood out in my mind was all of the psychological disorders. I think when reading about them we all seem to think of the people that we know that suffer from these diorders.

It was very interesting to learn what people go threw that are affected with these disorders. It was also good information to know cause maybe one day i will run by a person that does have a disorder and is unaware of it, i would be able to identify what it is and get help for that individual.
