Wow-
What an impressive forum! I'm thrilled to contribute and I would be happy to join in such conversations.
Mrs. A rocks.
Now about thosre three words. One thing my students find enlightening is the concept of "confirmation bias". That is when you see something and use that example to reinforces a belief. This is how it would work. Let's say I think all teenagers are poor drivers. I might not be aware of the seventeen teenage drivers following the rules of the road but the eighteenth driver (who happens to drive like a maniac)reinforces my prejudice.
We do this constantly so that we start to believe and sometimes act in a discriminatory manner.
Peace,
Shawn Parker

To me prejudice is an unfavorable opinion or feeling formed beforehand or without knowledge, thought, or reason. esp. when its regarding a racial, religious, or national group. Tolerance to me means that I'm kind of submissive to something at the moment that I normally wouldn't be. My opinion of conformity is when a person acts like or becomes something that the rest of the group is like, and its not really their own. I think psychologists feel it is important to learn more about these behaviors because it helps them research mroe about the human brain and how or why we act the way we do.
Welcome to the conversation, Mr. Parker! We look forward to hearing from you and your students as we continue our conversation.
Thanks for introducing us to th concept of "conformation bias." I'm going to explore that with students over here. It's so hard to "break the chain" once you've fallen into the habit of such discrimination.
Thanks for bringing this concept to the table.

I think conformity, prejudice, and tolerance are all linked. Everyone wants to be accepted and feel like they belong. If they don't, they try to change themselves. Everyone is prejudice in some way, even if they don't mean to be.
I believe that all 3 terms are interlinked. each one balances out the others somewhat like the US government. People conform to others prejudice and tolerance. People are prejudice against those who conform and those who tolerate. People tolerate those who always conform and they tolerate those who are prejudice.
I like what Kevin has pointed out about the three terms being linked. We are all prejudiced in some way towards something or somebody. The real work is in striving to be more tolerant of each other, of divergent opinions. That's not easy and it's further complicated by "confirmation bias" which I am stoked Mr. Parker brought up. Why is it so refreshing when a stereotype is obliterated? That helps me to remind myself that tolerance is so important, that it is so important to not judge any of the books by their covers. As Atticus Finch liked to say: Walk around in a woman/man's skin before judging her/him. Perhaps that will help provoke rhetoric and discussion, and then we can find common ground despite all of our differences?
prejudice is one who discriminates and has power over others.tolerance is someone who is knows they cant change people and realizes we're all different and isnt going to judge or discriminate against people because of that.conformity is when an individual changes something about themselves in order to fit the standards of the society they are in.and of course all of these conditions have affected my life.ive had people not like me because i have blonde hair and blue eyes, but im tolerant and tend to conform.
I'd love to have students expand their thoughts on this topic with some reflections on current news; so much struggle and growth comes out of the tensions among conformity, tolerance and prejudice.
You might use Infotrac or SIRS to search for current articles related to these issues.

Prejudice to me means treating people different because of a preconceived notion you have, Tolerance is being able to put up with something, such as a crying baby in the movie theater. Conformity is doing something just because everyone else is doing it.
Prejudice is not liking an individual because of his/her beliefs/race/religion. Tolerance, like pat said, is being able to handle a crying baby in the movie theaters. Seriously people why do you bring babies with you? Conformity I'm actually unsure of the meaning. Hopefully this unit will explain to me what that means. It is important to learn about these behaviors because these may also reflect on their personality. Well as far as I know; No one is prejudice against me and everyone tolerates me.
to me predjudice is all over this world and it will never go away, no matter what. it is the worst way to pick on someone. ok so tolerance i think means dealing with what you have or get in the best way you can. and conformity is just another excuse for people to try and fit in, everyone knows either you fit in to be noticed or you be an individual and stand out to be noticed. all three of these words connect in weird ways, you have to have tolerance to deal with predjudice people and if you just put up with those you people then you are just conforming with the rest of the selfish world.

Prejudice to me is horrible. I feel thats one of the worstways you can possibly hurt someone. we are all humans in this world and to go after someone because of their race is not right.

To me, prejudice is a horrible way of putting someone down; tolerance is how much you can put up with; and conformity is responding to an appearance. All of these refer to each person's way of dealing with other people. I cannot stand prejudice but in one way or another everyone has said something prejudice whether is was intentional or not. We all have tolerance whether it be high or low and we all judge a person by their appearance before getting to really know them.
I think that prejudice would be similar as someone who is racists. Tolerance would mean to me when someone can't change someone. Conformity means when others try to help someone with a certain behavior. I think psychologists think its important to learn more about these behaviors because its good to know more about them and why we have these types of behaviors. They have somewhat affected my life not personally but thoughtfully. It got me to think more about it and also read more about it.
Prejudice is something I hate. I don't think there is any room for prejudice in our world. I cannot stand racists jokes and it makes me even more mad when people try to justify their racist jokes by saying its just humor, or he knows I don't mean it. I understand that people of al racists make these jokes but to me it is not the joke that is detrimental it is the act of making the joke and thinking that it okay because people perceive it as "humor". tolerance is the first step to accepting. If everyone has tolerance for each other more people would get along. When you have tolerance your mind stays open to the person or group of people so you can see past what you don't like about them and you will probably eventually see something in them that you do like and value. Conformity can be a good and a bad thing. Conformity in a good way is just going with the flow and accepting what is happening around you as long as you like it and think it is the right thing to do you can just conform and do similar things as the people you are with. Conformity also has negative connotations such as times like the Nazi era when people conformed to an evil ideal because they either had to to save their own life or because they believed in it.
Psychologists feel it is important to learn about these behaviors because they are feelings that riddle people's everyday life and have proven to be time changing throughout history. As I explained before this three words and actions that go along with them have a very adversary effect on me when used in their worst ways, but nonetheless I think they are important ideals and explain a lot about humanity and the way our culture has shifted through time.
Prejudice means to me to judge people unrealistically and e rationally, Tolerance is how much strain you can take, and conformity is coming together with certain groups or things alike conforming to them. Psychologist feel it is important to learn about these behaviors So we can better understand them and overcome them. I don't think any of these conditions have really affected my life

To me, prejudice means the disliking of someone for completely wrong reasons or assumptions. Tolerance means accepting differences and being able to adapt to various types of people and surroundings. Conformity, to me, is when people just go along with the everyday social mold and don't really step outside those boundaries much. I think it's important for psychologists to learn more about these behaviors because they are commonly misunderstood. I've been raised to be VERY tolerant of a huge number of people and lifestyles. As for conformity, I know it's pretty much required to conform in a way, but I do whatever I can to just be me, whether that be following the social mold or not.
Prejudice means to me that you judge people without really knowing them. You hold negative feelings against specific people for no real reason. And Tolerance is allowing things or people to do whatever they want even though you don't agree. Conformity means you follow the standards of other people. We see a lot of this in today's society where self image is a huge thing.
I think prejudice means having a negative emotion towards people of a specific social group. Tolerance is being premissive attitude toward opinions and practices that differ from one's own. Conformity is an action or behavior in correspondence with socially accepted standards, conventions, rules or laws. I think that psychologists think it is important because tey want to learn more about the way we act.
To me prejudice means that you have a negative feeling towards a group of specific people. Tolerance means the amount of pressure you can with stand before you crack. and i think conformity is the ability to adapt to a new environment and blend with the social groups in it. Its important to know your own behaviors so you can control them. None really what other people think or speak about me is there own business i try not to let it affect me.
Prejudice is discrimination. Tolerance is putting up with something. Conformity is becoming or accepting what is around you. Psychologists feel the need to further anaylize these behaviors because they play such a big role in our society.

Prejudice to me is discrimination to others. Conformity is when someone follows majority's desires or standards. Tolerance is the allowed amount of variation from the standard. Psychologists feel its important to learn about these behaviors because they affect everyone at some time in their lives.

Prejudice means thinking lower of an individual cause of the tone of there skin or they look different than others and making sure that they do know that they are like that people rub it in there faces.
